If the mixture of irresistible rhythms, high energy musicianship, unique song selection and unabashed fun is what blows your skirt up, then One Eyed Cat is the band for you. All five members of the band first met at a jam session in the legendary blues bar The Blue Frog. Not long after, the owner, Arno Rocha hired them to play their first gig in July of '94 with Jerry Scaringe providing their musical direction. Originally calling themselves the Broken Blues Band, they soon established themselves locally, eventually changing their name to One Eyed Cat as their sound evolved into their current mixture of jump, New Orleans R&B, rockabilly and yes, still some blues.
JERRY SCARINGE, harmonica player, lead vocalist and primary songwriter of the band seems to be everywhere at once. His voice falls somewhere between a bark and a chainsaw and it's very hard to keep your eyes off of him. Jerry sites his influences as Kim Wilson, Howlin' Wolf, Professor Longhair and The Johnny Burnett Trio.
If you only looked at MIKE OLIVIERI's stone faced expression you would never believe what devilish sounds he coaxes out of his guitar. From the sweetly sublime to Armageddon Mike knows what to play and when to play it. He also shares vocal duty with Jerry, possessing a passionate and focused style. His influences are early Elvis, Rusty Zinn, The Belmont Playboys and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
MICKEY BURKE, age unknown, can do it all, from playing alto and tenor saxophone to such exotic percussion as rub board, maracas, carnival bongos, triangle, bodhran, cowbell and he'll even sing a song or two. With a past history in performance he had gotten back to playing the drums before being asked to join O.E.C. on sax and percussion. The energy he has when he performs is only surpassed by his stage outfits. Mickey's influences include Joe Houston, Lee Allen, King Curtis, Fats Domino and The Alan Freed Band.
DANNY CLARK's, aka Dangerous Dan, supple bass lines are the backbone of the rhythm section, providing a solid bottom that's hard to resist. Danny has been playing guitar for over twenty years and started playing bass about five years ago. His influences are The Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton and Chuck Berry.
RICK SPERBER is the newest member of O.E C., solving the revolving door problem the band was having with drummers. Rick's strong Jazz backround gave them the flexibility to work on more varied material. He's comfortable playing anything from a country two beat to many Latin grooves and he swings like no one you've ever heard. Rick sites his influences as Elvin Jones, Jack DeJohnette, Jim Gorden and Richie Hayward.
What makes O.E.C. different besides the odd mix of personalities is their ability to get to the root sounds of the music they play. It's like good ole Rock n' Roll. There's a freshness and a drive and it always grooves. There are no tricks, no pyrotechnics, just music with soul.
