Who is Barry Charles?

" he is an extraordinary vocalist, whose influences and style come from a blues, soul and contemporary rock background. He has an exceptional 'goes off the keyboard' five octave range. . ."
Inflections of Tom Waits, Otis Redding, Percy Sledge, Tim Buckley and Al Green are evident in the
emotional colour of his delivery. He can incorporate in a performance innovative scatting, interwoven
with the unmistakable sounds of Tuva singing as well as the colours of a vocal didgeridoo. Barry explores the technique of split harmonics and his phrasing is quite unique. His guitar playing has loads of power and passion, which he delivers rhythmically and percussively.

Barry returned to Australia after four and a half years overseas midway through 2002. Whilst in Europe he performed at the 2000 Glastonbury Festival in the UK, at the Hanover World Fair in
Germany, Crossroads Blues Café in Antwerp, Belgium, and at the Eden Project in Cornwall. During the six months before returning home he appeared regularly at well-known acoustic clubs
in London; the 12 Bar Club, Tall Poppy and 'The Bedford' pub; - a very unique music venue.

Shortly after returning home to Australia he recorded an album of his original songs -"Northern Shores" and performed at the Woodford Folk Festival in '02-'03. He followed this with performances at Bay of Islands Jazz & Blues Festival in New Zealand in August 2003, and again in New Zealand at the Whangarei Jazz Festival later the same year. November '03 he launched a new CD, "under the influence" - the songs of Tom Waits, and appearances at the International Wataboshi Festival at the Brisbane Powerhouse. He returned again to the Woodford Folk Festival in '03-'04 as well as the Village Arts Festival in '04 and again in '05 on the Capricorn Coast of Queensland.

Barry was invited back again to perform solo at the Bay of Islands Jazz & Blues Festival in August '04 and also with the backing of the renowned New Zealand blues band, The River Rockers at the Montana National Jazz & Blues Festival in Tauranga over Easter 2005.

He is presently nearing completion of a new solo album for '05 and as well as appearing at various festivals he continues to perform around the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia.
