PJ001 was recorded live during annual piano parties in Dallas-Fort Worth, TX, and Evansville, IN. It features solo and duet piano by Charlie Booty and Carl Sonny Leyland, a great player from South Hampton, England, as they do some improvising on their own ideas and revive some old blues and boogie woogie tunes from the past in the spirit of the early piano pioneers.
Charles D. Booty, a/k/a Charlie Booty, was born 2 Jan, 1928, in Flora, Louisiana, a small saw-mill town in the northwest part of the state. A self-taught musician, Charlie began playing piano in Jan, 1943, after a bout with pneumonia. Throat surgery in 1971, for cancer of the larynx, caused muscles to be cut in his left shoulder, requiring a re-training of his left arm to continue playing piano. In 1973 Charlie became a licensed pilot and in 1977 was in a plane crash, resulting in some loss of memory, including a total loss of how to play the piano. Eventually, he learned to play piano again.
While serving in the Army Air Corps as a radio operator and electronics instructor at Scott Field, IL, during the mid-1940's, Charlie played on weekends around the St Louis area, someimes solo, sometimes in a trio and sometimes in a country-western band. Between 1968 and 1978 Charlie played many times on the Steamboat Delta Queen. He also played in the Market Square Jazz Band, Memphis, TN, in the mid-to-late 1960's. From 1970 through 1999, he played the annual Goldenrod Jazz/Ragtime Festival in St Louis (later in St Charles, MO) and the Heritage Jazz Festival, Golden, CO. From 1973, until its demise, he played at the annual Toronto Ragtime Bash. Beginning in 1999 Charlie has performed in Europe at various events, including several trips on the Boogie Woogie Express (train excursions featuring continuous boogie piano) in Germany and Austria. In the book, A Left Hand Like God, written in 1988 by Peter Silvester, Devon, England, Charlie received honorable mention among all the past pioneers and current practioners of boogie woogie in the US and in Europe. In 1973 he received honorable mention in the book, The Delta Queen - Last of the Paddlewheel Palaces, specifically in the article, Affair With King Jazz, by Bill Crais.
Charlie has made several albums. Three LP's, made in the 1970's and 1980's, are out of print and are no longer available. He has performanced on numerous currently available CD's. You can write him at 1141 Broad St., Milan, TN 38358-2335, or contact him via e-mail at cdbooty@aeneas.net.
