Andy Mason (Kahn-tah'-wi-wim'-tchi-qt) - Bio
Andy Masons' independent debut CD, "Long Walk 49" features 49 minutes of songs written over 15 years. The album is a collection of mostly original material, including the song "Million Miles", co-written with a former band-mate, John Law. The CD draws on First Nations music, country, blues, bluegrass, even soul, Latin and pop, and is presently given some rotation on Aboriginal Voices Radio 106.5FM, Toronto.
Andy Mason was born in Toronto and grew up in rural Niagara Peninsula, with his grandparents in a family of Mohawk/Upper Cayuga descent. In a musical family, he was singing ever since he remembers and began playing drums at six years old, eventually teaching himself some piano, percussion, harmonica and guitar.
In 1983, he was introduced to the Toronto coffee house. His older brother Jay invited him to play at Native Expression Night at the Trojan Horse Café in August. In 1984, he joined the Kensington Youth Theatre Ensemble of St. Stephens (KYTES) troupe, who wrote and produced a controversial play featuring the "Long Walk 49 Song" and music co-written by the troupe, and his sister Corine. The troupe toured Canada, and was the subject of a Sunrise Films documentary, produced by Deepa Mehta. "Long Walk 49 Song" was included in the Circle Program by the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education for northern Native schools, and even sung by demonstrators in '86 during a televised protest.
After three years in theatre he helped form a CSNY tribute band '4 Way Street' with other Toronto musicians. Moving to Ottawa in 1987 the band toured Ontario and Quebec for several years opening for or sharing the stage with recording acts including Colin James, Five Man Electrical Band, Al Stewart, and Jeff Healey. Andy sang briefly for Ottawa's Chapter 23 in '93, originally including his song "Silverbirds", as part of their live show with him as lead singer. He also co-founded a short-lived classic rock/country band, the 'Waco Fire Brigade' with other musicians.
After the break up of 4 Way Street in '95, he spent two years playing the Ottawa area, playing bass for Celtic band The Crooked Horn and percussion with The Brementown Musicians. In '98 Andy arrived in Vancouver, busking, hosting open jams, and working on his first CD, presently available mostly at shows. He has played with Lakota singer/songwriter/actor Floyd "Red Crow" Westerman (Dances With Wolves), Joanne Storm, Joanne Shanendoah, opened for Redbone at the Yale Hotel in downtown Vancouver, and the Aboriginal Day Festival. He has recently formed a new band to showcase the CD, and new songs. . .
