"Sounds of New England, Volume 1," a unique collection of original music from talented recording artists from throughout Southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod. The Mansfield Music & Art Society to benefit from sales of "Sounds of New England, Vol. 1" compilation CD
(For the 8/14/03 issue of "Northern Light")
I have been promised some new local artists to cover here in the very near future...but until that time, I'm bringing you a 73-minute compilation of original folk, acoustic and blues music from Southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod entitled "Sounds of New England, Vol. 1." This extensive, gorgeous collection brings together 17 acts that include Lori McKenna (courtesy of Signature Sounds), Greg Greenway, Cactus Highway, Paul Horton, Robbie O'Connell, the John Michaels Group and Kai Olsson. These 'Artists United for the Arts' have a good cause to support with the proceeds going to the Mansfield Music & Arts Society, which has hosted folk events and provided a stage for many area acts (funding for this CD project was provided by the Sun Chronicle Newspaper of Attleboro, MA, by the way). What you have with this compilation is a slice of what's being served up at coffeehouses throughout New England; songs like "Every Little Day," "Handful of Flowers," "Yankee Clipper Sails Again," "In Advance," "Misty Flavored Seashore," "The Ferry," "Ocean Under the Moon," and "I've Got a Plan" not only entertain but enlighten the listener with the artists' observations; and I really enjoy the multitude of styles and sounds that are present on this excellent one-hour-and-thirteen-and-a-half-minute-long collection. If you enjoy acoustic music, you should check out "Sounds of New England, Vol. 1."
The Society also accepts donations of land, automobiles, stocks, cash and more to assist in funding their programs as well as to build a lasting endowment for the arts in Massachusetts. MMAS is a 501 (c) 3 tax-exempt arts organization located in Mansfield at the crossroads of two major highways (495 & 95) and halfway between Boston & Providence RI. The town is known for the Tweeter Center of Performing Arts (a major concert destination) In fact the society has recieved gifts from Aerosmith, Jimmy Buffet, and Dave Mathews.
ANNUAL FOLK EVENT
Our Sounds of New England album project we hope will become an annual event to benefit not only MMAS but to help create a lasting record of the sounds and music created in the North Eastern United States. We are thankful to each folk artist for donating their music to the album. MMAS is working with a major record promoter to help get radio air time in the northeast US and eventually national. Our hopes is that the attention of this album will not only assist MMAS but also the careers of the artists who have participated in this project.
