As we (to use the cliche) “journey through lifeâ€, we amass a host of experiences, some good, some bad, and many simply mundane. Andy Logan explores some of these different experiences and emotions in “Rideâ€, paying careful attention to leave out the mundane.
There’s anger (Ominous), sadness (Low), love (Soul Inspiration), lust (Move A Little Faster), reflection (Ghosts), transition (Behind The Curtain), and death (Til We Meet), to name a few.
A self-described recluse, Andy Logan is a bit odd, or at least anachronistic. He drives a 1968 Mustang, has three working antique rotary phones in his house, a vast record collection, and has, with his wife Alison, restored their bathroom to exactly how it was back in 1928 (When the house was built). What little TV he does watch is on an old black and white. He has a passion for old radio shows, refuses to own a cell phone, and rides (as the cd attests) a vintage Schwinn bicycle. Most importantly though, Andy Logan records to tape. “It’s a lost artâ€, Andy says. “But if I want those vocals to sound warm enough and those acoustic guitars to sound fat enough, I have to use tape.â€
In recording “Rideâ€, Andy plays most of the instruments himself, leaning heavily on his ’71 Gibson SG custom for the electric guitar work, and his old Ibanez for the acoustic stuff. Kurt Custer (Steve Earle, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Little America) again plays drums, and Lynyrd Skynyrd icon Ed King demonstrates some of his finest slide work since “The Ballad of Curtis Loweâ€. Nashville symphony violinist Kristi Seehafer, and bassist Paul Slivka (Tommy Conwell and The Young Rumblers) also add dramatic touches to the musical landscape.
Slightly bluesier than his first solo cd, “Last Dance On The Wild Frontier†(thanks to Logan’s obsession with R.L. Burnside, Free, and Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac), “Ride†nevertheless has some very melodic pop sensibilities as well, and because of its eclectic nature, should simply be filed under “Really damn goodâ€.
