Anita Coats was born in Santa Monica, CA and grew up in Simi Valley. Growing up in the suburbs was the perfect place to get creative since there was nothing more exciting to do. She started performing in dance recitals and despite being a shy kid she loved the feeling of being on stage. She moved on to theater when she was sixteen and it seemed everyone she met played guitar. She learned four chords and wrote her first song at the age of seventeen. After about a year she had enough songs for a set and started playing out in coffee shops and such and hasn't stopped since. When she first started writing she was listening to Edie Brickell's, Ghost of a Dog album and Joni Mitchell's, Miles of Aisles. She is inspired by Nick Drake, Elliot Smith, Ani Difranco, Iron and Wine, Catherine Feeny, and Goldenboy. She wishes she could write songs like Stevie Wonder.
She wishes she had the patience and dedication to learn how to play the guitar, but so far she has done pretty well going off what sounds good to her. She finds that less effort works best - the songs just flow out when they decide to come, rarely spending more than an hour or two writing one song. Not always having been a vocally expressive person, Anita finds songwriting and singing the best remedy for letting stuff go,moving on, and expressing herself. Some songs reveal only a momentary feeling, captured by lyric and buzz of guitar. She is inspired most by people she crosses paths with. Her songs make up a photo album of friends and lovers, a diary of thoughts and feelings.
Anita's first album, anita coats, was completed and released in 2002. She has the intention to make many more recordings. You can currently hear Anita's music on the Unsigned Artist channel on XM Satellite Radio. You can also see Anita playing solo or with her band around LA. There is something about seeing her play live that may never be able to be captured on even the best recording.
