Rumor, the first recording of the instruments of Anarchestra, was recorded late winter-early spring 2001 in Chilmark, Massachusetts. All the instruments were played by Alex Ferris. Prior to this the instruments had been intended to be played along with conventional instruments, but the results of Rumor convinced Alex that they should stand alone. Several of the instruments were conceived and constructed during the recording process as the need for their sounds arose. During the recording of the eighth piece the ADAT broke and swallowed the tape. The music on this CD, taken from work-in-progress mixes is all that remains.
Rumor is the romance language root-word for noise. That bible quote about "rumors of wars" doesn't mean gossip, but the sounds of fighting outside the city walls.

"When I hear drum machines and synthesizers the images that come to mind are of patients in intensive care units attached by tubes to devices that regulate their heartbeats, force oxygen into their lungs, add nutrients to their blood, and manage their pain. To me these represent the most joyless aspects of living, analogous to the way our habitats have evolved into sprawls of pavement constructed with the goal of making life better for our cars than for our children."
