Not many musicians have risen so quickly and deservedly into the upper ranks of the jazz world as has drummer Ari Hoenig. Ari was born in 1973 in Philadelphia, PA to to musical parents who helped to shape his early musical experiences. His father is an educator, conductor, and classical singer, and his mother a violinist. He first played the violin and piano, and finally settled on the drums. He started playing jazz in High school, honing his skills at legendary Philly jam sessions, like Ortliebs Jazz Haus, and playing with other young gifted jazz musicians.
Ari attended the prestigious University of North Texas for 3 years where he studied with Ed Soph and played and recorded with the "One O'clock" jazz band. Desiring to be closer to NYC, he transferred to William Patterson college in northern New Jersey, and found himself playing for legendary Philadelphia organist, Shirly Scott, and working in New York.
For the past 5 years Ari has been a member of the Jean-Michel Pilc trio and the Kenny Warner trio. Ari has played with Joe Lovano, Gerry Mulligan, Dave Holland, and can be found playing in the bands of Pat Martino, Dave Liebman, Mark Murphy, Richard Bona, Seamus Blake, Mike Stern, The Jazz Mandolin Project, and Sam Yahael.
Ari Hoenig is not the typical sideman. Ari is also a writer, arranger, and bandleader, and his compositions and arrangements grace the repertoires and recordings of Werner, Pilc, The Jazz Mandolin Project, Julien Lourau, and now his own band (featuring Pilc, Schwarz-Bart, and Matt Penman).
Ari is excited and proud of the formation of his own quartet that plays his unique compositions and arrangements. Pilc, Penman, and Schwarz-Bart, have been blazing their own trails internationally, so it is no surprise that the quartet is gaining strong audiences and critical acclaim in New York and Philadelphia.
The release of two solo CD's, Time Travels and The Life Of A Day, chronicles his explorative nature, and ambitious tribute to the melodic possibilities of the drum set. He has toured the world extensively, appeared on nearly fifty recordings, has been featured in interviews for, "Drummer", "Rim Shot" and "Relix" magazines, reviewed by "Jazz Times", "DownBeat" and "Jazziz", and performed on numerous television and Radio broadcasts. From gigging with traditionalist, Bucky Pizzarelli, to the cutting edge sounds of Wayne Krantz, Ari has emerged into one of the most adaptable drummers on the scene, showing his versatility and knowledge of the jazz tradition, while forging a new direction.
